Well, I finally received the package from Germany this morning and guess what! I got right hand drive door handles even after questioning them before I placed the order. I guess I am just going to have to bite the bullet and use them. I'm not sure if or when I will ever have to lock the car, it will just be inconvenient to have to get out ,walk around, reach through to lock the drivers door, and then shut the passenger door and lock it with a key. Rats!

Still waiting. USPS seems to have lost the package between here and Jersey City. They claim it is still on it's way. (via 20 snail team)

I had the chance to install all the weather-stripping on the drivers side. I can't install the window and trims until I get my new door handles from Germany, supposed to be here next Tuesday, here's hoping. Anyway, the window channels, the window weatherstrip around the roof, the body weatherstrip around the door and the door weatherstrip itself are all on and dried. I also adjusted the door latch so the door closes properly.

Unfortunately the swap didn't work out. When the cylinder gets moved to the other side of the car it also gets turned upside down due to the gating in the inside of the case for the lock cylinder. The problem with this is the tumblers are allowed to slightly fall out and they catch on the interior of the handle. This locks the push button in the in position and has to be reset by inserting the key to withdraw the tumblers. Not good, they are being returned in the morning to the vendor.

I forgot to take pictures after finishing the weatherstrip and window installation. I have already turned the car around so I can work on the drivers side so you will just have to look at the inside and use your imagination. You can see the door pull and window roller is now in place. The door handles were for the European market, having the lockable one on the right side. Fortunately, the lock cylinders are screwed to the handles so I was able to swap them over.

The last two pieces of weather stripping were cut and fitted to the front and rear inner door edges on the right side of the car. I am waiting for the new door handles  before I install the window glass.

This is what you get for $463

So, a rainy Saturday was spent installing these items. First up was attaching the window felts to the chrome window trims. I used #2 by 3/16" flathead sheet metal screws like below.

I clamped the felt to the trim pieces, measured and drilled holes using a #48 bit. The felts were then screwed on and the end result was this.

Notice that two are up and two are down so you can see what I am talking about. These trim pieces mount on the top edge of the door on each side of the window glass. Next I cut and glued the rubber window channel linings into the channels and allowed them to dry overnight. The first picture is all the clamps needed to hold them in place while drying and the second is the finished product. There is also a vertical piece in each door that is non removable. I installed the right side one. The other side will have to wait until I can turn the car around.

Next, I installed the top of window seal on the roof as shown below.

The on door seal was glued and clamped in place to dry.

While waiting for everything to dry, I decided to strip the seat upholstery off the seat frames to prepare them for powder coating.

So ends a long productive day.

While waiting for the gas to siphon out of the car I'm working on, I decided to figure out a way to make the door glass rollers work again. After freeing them up so they would turn, I was able to dis assemble them and replace the old, cracked, rotted rubber with new fresh rubber. The little black piece in the center is one of the old roller covers for comparison.

Also, I have ordered all the rubber seals to go around the doors, around the window tops and in the window guides inside the doors. I also ordered the seal across the top of the windshield where the folding top seals. I will be posting my progress installing these seals, the windows and the door operating hardware--except the outer handles, I will be ordering new ones. (After finishing another Corvair) Fiat parts are expensive!

Phil, I've tried multiple times to answer your question but for some reason I can't publish a reply, here is the information you requested.

I had a small gap in the Corvair work waiting for the machine shop to finish balancing my parts, so I thought I would connect and adjust the parking brake cables. Shouldn't take over 15-20 minutes, right? So, three hours later it is done. I also moved the seats out of storage into the car in the hopes it would entice me into upholstering and installing them. We shall see. I didn't take pictures of them because no one wants to see old ratty looking seats in a refreshed interior. I will take before and after shots when I do the upholstery work.
The before and after shots of the brake cable installation are below for what it's worth.

Looks simple doesn't it---NOT!

I guess I should post a picture of the finished starter cable clip installed just to show that I AM still working on the little car. Tonight I am also making up a list of parts to order from Germany. Stuff that I can't get here in the states. I will order these as soon as I get paid for the present Corvair in the shop.

It has been too long, I know, but I just got a few minutes to putter around with some small stuff that needed doing. I installed the chrome strip on the passenger side door and made up an extension clip for the starter cable (too short) Is anything correct for Fiats? I'm slightly embarrassed at how long it took to make this little clip and it still needs to be painted and allowed to dry overnight before installing it. I'll git'er done tonight. I need to start removing all the pieces that need to be sent to the chrome shop that I had to temporarily install to check the wiring circuits. Kinda hate to do it but when they go back on they will be shinier and have real gaskets, win-win.

A little more progress today. I installed the carpet, choke and starter control, console and burnt the holes for the seat belts. I also turned the car around in the shop so I could work from the passenger side. (no steering wheel in the way)

Well, it took forever but it is done. All the wiring is in, everything works and I can now move on to the rest of the car. It had some bad switches, bad light bulbs, bad grounds and one of the sealed beams decided to die right in the middle of tracing all the circuits. That was when I discovered no one stocks plain sealed beams any more. A few places had halogen replacements but I didn't want them due to the 58 year old wiring design and light weight wires. I found new Wagner 6014's on Ebay for $4.97 each-- no brainer. I had to cut out a ton of wire due to it being a Fiat 500D harness but it all worked out and it IS prettier now.

The last couple of days have just been doing odd small jobs. I was finally able to install the correct accelerator cable. I temporarily installed all the lights with new bulbs so I can check the wiring system when I get to that point. As shown, I think I have all the wiring traced out. I need to find and install a new correct fuel gauge sending unit and buy a battery to provide voltage. If all checks okay, I will trim and dress the harness so it doesn't look like a rats nest. The plan is for black mini wire ties every 4-6 inches or so. The windshield wiper motor is temporarily wired up and grounded so as to operate without being installed. It will be correctly placed and securely bolted down after the wiring is finished. I have a big job (Corvair) coming in tomorrow so I won't be working on the Bianchina for a while. Should provide the time and money to import a sending unit from Italy. Be back soon.

I was able to locate some very nice door trim strips to replace my bent and damaged ones. I removed the old fuzzy strips from them and buffed them to a high polish. I was also able to source some windshield wiper parts from the same source so a day or so was spent in dis assembling, cleaning, choosing the best parts, lubricating, assembling and testing the complete wiper system for the car. It also left me me with a lot of spare parts for any future needs. I need to purchase a three conductor switch, install it, temporarily install the wiper system and if all the wiring checks out, dress the harness so it doesn't look like a rats nest. The wiper system will then be permanently installed.

I have spent the last couple of days wrestling with the wiring harness i am installing. I am adapting a Fiat 500 D harness to a Bianchina, some wires are too long, some are too short, some are a different color and some have the wrong kind of connectors on them. Each wire has to be traced its entire length to make sure it does what it is supposed to do. I feel that when I have it all installed I will be removing some of the wires that apparently are not used on the Bianchina. I am also planning on neatly dressing out the harness and possibly wrapping the wires to neaten up the luggage compartment---we'll see. I can only work on this for about three hours before my back starts hurting so it is going a little slow and I only work on it when the Corvair work is done.

Monday, January 1, 2018

I have spent the last three days figuring out the wiring harness and what changes need to be made to adapt a Fiat 500D harness to a Bianchina. One more day and I think I'll have it. If so, I'll start installing the harness and connecting everything (and hoping it works!)
